Water main break closes school

By Rob Ginter - Staff Writer

School was closed in Rowan County Tuesday due to a water main break just off Flemingsburg Road near the high school.

According to Rowan Water manager Jerry Patrick, the break was under a gas line, which made the repair a little bit more complicated.

“Monday night the ten-inch water line had a 17-foot long split under a Tennessee Gas pipeline,” Patrick said. “It was under solid rock and we can only dig so close to their pipeline before Tennessee Gas has to come and take over.

“They had to call somebody in from Clay City once they got there and got their line exposed,” he said. “Under normal circumstances it doesn’t take that long but when you’re dealing with a 30-inch pipeline and solid rock it makes it more difficult. Rowan Water and Tennessee Gas was there all night and they never left.”

The water leak affected Rowan County Senior High School, McBrayer Elementary, Maysville Community and Technical College Rowan Campus, Guardian and residences from Harold White Lumber north.

“It was closer to noon Tuesday before everyone got their pressure back,” Patrick said. “We didn’t have a lot of people affected but where it was located caused the most problems. Really it wasn’t that big it was just the location. It wasn’t something you deal with every day (only because of the gas line).”

School resumed in Rowan County the next day, but was cancelled on Thursday due to bad weather.
