Lady Vikings spike another victory

August 31, 2010 —     The Lady Vikings moved to 5-7 on the season Thursday with a 2-0 victory over East Carter at home.

In the first set, the gals in green slipped by the Lady Raiders for a 25-20 win. Rowan found their rhythm late in set one when the hitters suddenly doubled their aggression.

“They suddenly found their killer mentality,” Assistant Coach Dusty Coyle said. “They are seeing the reward of good play and the offense is getting the strength we are looking for. With a good hustle on defense, they are able to put together a strong attack.”

Rowan took the second set with a little more confidence, spiking their way to a 25-18 win.

“I am very satisfied with the way they played,” Coyle said

“A lot of the little elements we have been bringing to the team are starting to show. A little more play on defense will eliminate the other teams from coming in during the first set. Then we can dominate in the beginning of the match and keep it that way.”

The Lady Vikings’ front row hitters found their swing in Thursday’s game and the team as a whole seemed to jell in a way Coyle hasn’t seen this season.

“They are an entirely different team then they were last week,” Coyle said. “They are finally figuring out who they are. This week is 3-0 and now we are going to hold on and move forward in a positive direction.”

The gals in green have a few days of rest before their next match up. Rowan will travel to Bath on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. match.

“Bath is going to scrap really hard,” Coyle said. “They have been practicing really well. They will be coming ready to attack us.”

District seeding is on the line in Thursday’s game, so both teams will come in playing for an important win.

“They will bring the best game they have,” Coyle said. “We are going to play our hearts out and we hope more people will come out and support us.”
