March 30, 2012 —
After rain forced cancellations for most of the area's games over the weekend, the Rowan County Lady Vikings did not skip a beat, as it headed home early from Owingsville Monday evening, destroying t Bath County, 16-1, to end the game in the fourth inning.
With little time to celebrate, Rowan's girls boarded ship once again, this time heading to Maysville to take on a tough Lady Royals bunch.
A tightly played first four innings of play, gave fans quite the game to watch, with both teams knotted at five headed into the fifth.
Three runs and four singles in the bottom of the fifth inning, including an RBI single to cap the spurt, enabled Mason County to take the lead, 8-5.
Colleen Helvey, who went two-for-four with two RBIs, led a quick response by Rowan, as she connected on a ground single to begin the comeback. Helvey then made her way to home plate after a walk to Tessa Jennings with the bases loaded.
In the top of the seventh, Helvey also came through again when she drove in teammates Mckenzie Summers and Lindsey Wilson.
With its final two runs of the night, the Lady Vikings had battled back to tie the game at eight, leaving its defense to be the deciding factor.
Mason's Abby Huff quickly put the pressure on Rowan, hitting a powerful triple towards the left field wall. Mitchell then intentionally walked two Mason batters before ripping a shot to left field for the game-winning run to leave Rowan with the loss, 9-8.
Helvey led the way for Rowan County offensively, while Summers also impressed as she went two for three with two RBI's, with Becca Duff chipping in with a double on one for three at bat.
Following its two-game road trip, the Lady Vikings traveled to Harrison County last night before a home stand this weekend, taking on Fleming County on Friday and East Carter on Saturday.
