Morehead Youth League is back in action

The Morehead Youth League Basketball teams are back in action after taking a holiday hiatus. On Monday, the girls third through fifth grade teams matched up.

The Monarchs beat the Mystics, 30-17. The teams were tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter, but the Monarchs pulled ahead with four unanswered points in the second. Ariel Gross led the Mystics in scoring with 13 points and Kenna Cornett sank two. Honor Hare and Janae Graham had six each for the Monarchs.

The Comets beat the Sparks, 23-6. Nicole Plank led the Comets in scoring with 10 points. Kalle Eldridge had five and Katlyn Carter made two. Taylor Pignolet had three points for the Sparks. Madison Hurt had two and Rebecca Drum sank one.

The Lynx took the Storm, 23-19. Summer Oakley led the Storm with 12 points. Hannah Taylor had five and Kyra Baldridge had two. Emma Banks was the top scorer for the Lynx with eight points. Allyson Callahan, Emilee Demoss and Anderson Harper each sank four.

On Tuesday night the boys’ third and fourth grade teams were back to the court.

The Cavs beat the Magic, 31-8. Ethan Ratliff was the top scorer for the Cavs with 16 points. Peyton Fannin had six and Tanner Lewis sank four. Drew Holbrook, Noah Tansil and Chris Oakley scored two points each for the Magic.

The Heat took the Pistons, 22-6. Tyler Gardner and Zack Alcorn led the Heat with six points each while Bryce Kidd sank four. Kyle Gammon led the Pistons with four points and John Nickell had two.

The Nuggets beat the Celtics, 28-22. The Celts took an early lead, but fell behind 17-10 at the half. Jake Eldridge led the Nuggets in scoring with 12 points. Caleb Maze had nine and Clay Sizemore sank four. B Harlan Carter led the Celts with eight points while Jared Lewis and Cole Nickell had four each.

The Knicks took the Warriors, 29-23. Mason McGhee led the Knicks with 10 points. Khi Adkins had six and Jacob Messer had five. Braiden Thacker sank 11 points for the Warriors. Nick Anderson had eight and Brandon Mason had two.

The girls were also back on the court on Tuesday as well.

The Lynx took the Mystics, 23-16. Ariel Gross led the Mystics with eight points while Makda Mehari had four. Kammy Rose and Kenna Cornett had two points each. Kaylee Thornsberry led the Lynx with 14 points. Allyson Callahan had seven and Emma Banks sank two.

The Sparks beat the Storm, 24-14. Allie Brown led the Sparks with 10 points while Danielle Staton and Madison Hart had four each. Summer Oakley sank eight for the Storm while Hannah Taylor had six.

The Monarchs beat the Comets, 26-20 in double overtime. The Monarchs took an early 6-2 lead in the first quarter, but the Comets led 14-10 at the half. Both teams battled through the third, where the Monarchs scored two unanswered points. Both teams were tied 18-18 at the buzzer. Both teams sank two points in the first overtime, but the Monarchs pulled ahead with six unanswered points in the final overtime. Nicole Planck led the Comets in scoring with 13 points. Oliva DeHart, Kallee Eldridge and Layla Litton had two each. Kendra Holbrook led the Monarchs with eight points while Mallory Muncy and Taylor Tyndall sank four each.
