Eagle netters open season 1-1

Morehead State men's tennis opened the 2010 Spring season this weekend on the road, defeating IUPUI 6-1 Friday night and giving 14th-ranked Kentucky all it could handle before falling 4-2 Saturday.

The Eagles and Wildcats did not compete in doubles Saturday.

Redshirt senior Greg Anderson and freshman Nathan Martin had unblemished marks over the weekend, picking up two singles wins each and a doubles victory Friday night.

"I was very proud of my teammates' effort and sportsmanship this weekend. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season, and I'm very excited to see what this team is made of," said senior captain Dusan Milovanovic. "We work very hard every day and when the team gets complete I think we will have really a good chance to win the conference."

Anderson played number one singles and doubles for the Eagles. He defeated IUPUI's Deon Shafer 7-6, 6-0 and took down UK's Alex Lambropoulos 6-2, 6-3 Saturday night. He also teamed with Bradley Bryan to hand IUPUI duo Dan Klingenberg and Jorge Yunes an 8-5 loss Friday.

Martin, playing numbers four and five singles, started his season with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory against Yunes Friday and returned to defeat UK's Matt Davis 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 Saturday. He teamed with Nathan Blum on Friday to win 8-5 over Bren Vasalakis/Joel Modesitt at number three doubles.

On Friday, Milovanovic defeated Klingenberg 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at number two singles. Bryan won 6-3, 6-4 over Vasalakis on court three, and Blum defeated Nick Volz 7-6, 6-4 at number five. Bryan also took UK's Brad Cox to three sets before falling Saturday.

The Eagles' home opener and next scheduled match is Saturday, Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. against University of the Cumberlands at Sadler Courts.
