A team effort

Aug. 14, 2012 —

Today, many of you may be delving into the cornucopia of local high school sports with The Morehead News and Journal-Times collaborative special section known as the “Fall Sports Spectacular.”

Let me start off this post by saying that I hope all of you are enjoying the preview bits about each of our teams, for there is a unique story to identify with each of them.

The special section is a collection of team efforts, not just on the field, but here within the offices at your local newspaper.

Reminiscent of my days on the field and the court in high school, it truly felt as if I had laid aside my camera and was once again suited up for battle.

There is one key significant factor that made this thing work, and now I would like to take this opportunity to display my gratitude to the coaches of all of our teams.

In sports terms, composing this section provided a frenzied style of play, and without help from the coaches, none of it would have been possible.

Solid teamwork is perhaps the most significant necessity to achieving victory. Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi knew how to put it better than anyone when he said, “Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

Today’s special section is a powerful example of this, and the fact is that conforming to a unified group effort does make its way into our lives in a number of ways, not just in the realm of sports.

I wanted our fall sports spectacular to be a reference for the fans, a place to go when curious about one of our teams. In the next couple of weeks, you will be able to locate all of these stories about the separate teams on www.themoreheadnews.com, official website of The Morehead News.

Once again, I would like to just say thank you to everyone who helped make today’s “Fall Sports Spectacular,” a reality. The fact is, the student athletes who participate in our school sports deserve recognition for the hard work that goes into being a student, while participating in a sport.

As a former student athlete, I understand first hand how hard it is, and have tremendous respect for those who accept the challenge.

I hope you enjoy the warm up my friends, because as of this week, high school football and soccer join volleyball as they officially kick off the regular season.

As your sports editor, I vow to provide all of your desired Rowan County coverage, and as fans, I hope you vow to be the supporters these young athletes need.
