MSU women fall at Jacksonville
Jacksonville State hit nine three-pointers, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc to upset Morehead State, 70-60 and spoil Morehead State women’s basketball’s bid for its first-ever 6-0 Ohio Valley Conference start Saturday.
The Gamecocks, last in the league in rebounding margin, also outrebounded MSU 48-39, adding 12 second-chance points. JSU converted 17 Morehead State turnovers into 24 points. The Eagles by contrast struggled from long range, their usual forte. Morehead State was 10-of-34 in 3-point shooting.
“You can’t afford these kind of games and this kind of effort,” MSU coach Mike Bradbury said. “We got exactly what we deserved today, we got whipped in every facet of the game.”
The Eagles opened the first half with three consecutive treys, two from Courtney Lumpkin who had 15 first-half points. Jacksonville State answered each time, however, pulling ahead by as much as nine in the first half. MSU closed to within two before a late field goal gave JSU a four-point halftime advantage.
The teams traded buckets early in the first half and Morehead State pulled ahead by three on a jumper by Tiffany Hamilton and a free throw by Lumpkin. Karisma Boykin sunk a 3-pointer to tie it and the Eagles never regained the lead.
Lumpkin scored 16 points and she dished off five assists. Chynna Bozeman added 15 and Tiffany Hamilton had 13. Deja Watson pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
JSU had four players score in double figures, led by Boykin’s 16. Brittany Wiley scored 13 and had a team-high nine rebounds. Zenobia Pitts and Danielle Vaughn finished with 16 and 14 points respectively.
Morehead State next will host Southeast Missouri at 5:15 in Johnson Arena on Thursday.
