The Vikings moved to 2-1 on their season Thursday night with a home win over Estill County, 3-1.
Nathan Ray nailed an unassisted goal in the first half of the game. Brandon Lewis was able to score in the second half on an assist from Alex Bowling. The third goal was a penalty kick from Bowling.
The Vikes showed seamless cooperation on the offensive side of the field, playing an unselfish game that led to success.
“Our kids have been playing together since Middle school,” Coach Alan Evans said. “They have been trained not to take a shot that has a low success rate. They are always looking to pass it to someone who has a higher- percentage shot.”
Madison Justice was in goal for the win, allowing just one goal when Estill had a set piece after a Rowan foul. The Vikings were unable to clear the ball after the shot and it landed at a lucky Estil shooter’s feet.
“Madison had several saves in the first half of the game,” Evans said. “Without him, it would have been easily 3-1 in their favor at the half.”
Rowan’s guys nailed communication on the offensive side of the field, but still suffered a couple of breakdowns on the defensive end.
“We just need to be more organized in the back,” Evans said. “We need to mark off the dangerous threats and communicate to keep them out of the net.”
Rowan play host to West Carter Monday (after press time). This is the first varsity season for the Comets, who are looking to quickly build their team up in a trial by fire.
“They will come in and play a very physical game, and they are a young program just like Estill,” Evans said in a pre-game interview. “We are looking to finish strong, work on our positioning and our finishing.” The Vikings travel to Bath County tonight (Tuesday) for a 5:30 p.m. match-up. The battle will be an important one for both teams, as it determines post-season district seeding.
“It is important for us to come out with a victory, plus district bragging rights,” Evans said. “We are hoping to come out of there with a win to secure that top seat.”
The Vikings will travel to Montgomery County Thursday. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
