RCMS 7th grade football playing big

Sept. 10, 2012 —        One word can summarize the season that the seventh grade RCMS football team has seen thus far…success.

The RCMS 7th grade football season opened the season with a 16- 6 win over Raceland. Scoring touchdowns for the Vikings was Chad Hall.  Kelly Norris converted the two-point conversion.

Win number two came against the West Carter Comets.  Runs by Chad Hall and conversions by Kelly Norris and Ben Hutchinson enabled RCMS to jump out to a 24-0 first quarter lead.

Norris scored again in the fourth quarter to push Rowan to a 30-8 win. Credit for the great start belonged to the blocking of wide receivers Nick Tiedeman, Tate Johnson, and linemen Kyle Fannin, Corey Molton, Colton Armstrong, Jake Jennings, Cole Adkins, Hunter Hurst, Zack Watkins and Aaron McKinney.

Harrison County was victim number three, as Rowan claimed the winner's trophy at the Bourbon Bowl in Paris with a 30-8 win.  The young defense led by the line play of Brain Carter, Colton Armstrong, Nathan Perry, Dillion Thomas, Tate Johnson and Linebackers Matt Gagliano, Chad Hall, Hunter Hurst, and Jake Jennings shut down Harrison's wishbone ground.  The secondary of Ben Hutchinson, Nick Tiedeman, Vince Harper and Chris Bolton shut down the passing game.

Win number four was a hard fought 16-14 win over Fleming County.  In a very close game that saw RCMS score first for a 8-0 lead The eight point lead did not last long as Fleming promptly returned the kickoff to make the score 8-6.  Fleming scored again to lead 14-8 at the half.

Battling hard, Rowan finally scored to go ahead 16-14 with two minutes left in the game on a Chad Hall 25-yard touchdown run.

With the remaining time, Fleming drove the ball to the Rowan six-yard line with 22 seconds remaining in the game.  On the last play of the game, Chad Hall, Tiedeman and the defense came up with the play of the game stopping Fleming inches from the goal line to win the game.

The Vikings next competitor came in the form of the Boyd County Lions, a game that saw the Vikings extend its record to 5-0.  RCMS won this game 26-6 behind the blocking of the Rowan offensive line and the running of Hall, Hutchinson, and Gagliano.  The defense played a solid game against Boyd County’s stack one defense.

Rowan County Head Coach Terry Chin said he is proud of the effort his boys have put forth this season.

“These guys have worked very hard and have achieved some great things thus far in the 2012 season,” Chin said.  “We have a lot of talent on this team and all of these boys love to win.  The desire to win is something you can’t teach your kids, and it makes being a coach that much more enjoyable.”
