March 18, 2010 — KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Morehead State gave up 10 runs over the first two innings to Tennessee and was held to just two runs on three hits in the game, falling 13-2 in Knoxville Wednesday night.
Free passes and an error cost the Eagles in the bottom of the first. Starter Tyler Hieneman issued walks to three of the four first batters he faced to load the bases with one out. An error by third baseman Taylor Davis on a Matt Hamaker groundball allowed the first run to score. After Hieneman plunked Matt Duffy to plate another run, Zach Osborne smacked a grand slam to left field. The Vols tacked on another run later in the inning to make it 7-0 Tennessee after just one inning.
Morehead State got on the scoreboard in the top of the second, but only got one run after loading the bases with no outs. After Davis and Michael Bottoms singled to start the inning, Andrew Deeds was hit by a Rob Catapano offering to put three on for Michael Fear. Fear grounded into a double play, scoring Davis but effectively ending the rally.
Tennessee tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second to make the score 10-1 and added three additional insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Deeds tallied the only other hit in the game for MSU, nailing his second home run of the season in the top of the ninth.
MSU returns to the field for a four-game set with IPFW this weekend in the friendly confines of Allen Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
