Softball splits wins at Butler

March 18, 2010 — The Morehead State softball team fell 2-1 in nine innings in game one at Butler University Tuesday afternoon but responded to win the nightcap 5-1.

The Eagles are now 7-10 with a single game at Kentucky on Thursday at 1 p.m.

In the opener, MSU pitcher Alex Gjevre allowed only three hits but took the tough-luck loss as the Eagles managed just two hits themselves. Gjevre struck out a season high 11 Butler hitters.

The Eagles ran into a buzz saw in the form of Butler freshman pitcher Jenny Esparza who fanned 17 Eagle hitters.

The Eagles had the bases loaded in the ninth inning but could not plate the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs scored the winning run on an outfield fielding error.

In the second game, freshman Amber Riddle connected on her second career home run and had two hits, while senior Brittany Scheer drove in two runs with a double. Junior Rebecca Butler also produced two hits.

Senior pitcher Sarah Funston tossed the first six frames and picked up the win to improve to 5-3.

Sheer got the Eagles on top first with her stand-up double in the second inning to score Sam Woodall and Kayla Ashbrook. Riddle brought the other three runs home on her second round-tripper in the fifth inning.
