Vikings fall at Lewis, 46-41

By Leeann Tanner - Staff Writer

The Vikings fell to 7-10 on the season Tuesday with a road loss to Lewis County, 46-41.

Rowan’s guys opened to a promising start, grabbing an 11-6 lead in the first quarter. By the half, the Viks were up 25-17. Lewis County narrowed the gap to three p[oints in the third and pulled past Rowan in the final quarter.

“We didn’t do as well in the second half defensively,” Coach Shawn Thacker said. “Koty Riley had 22 points for them. Guarded or not, he made every shot and we didn’t do well under the basket.”

Darrell Cross and Cody Hunter led the Vikings in scoring with 12 points each. Adam Wing put up nine and Corey Hunter had three. Danny Weigel and Jon Stacy put up two each while While Jason Egan nailed one from the charity stripe.

The Vikings will host 16-4 East Carter tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. The Raiders have won nine of their last 10 games, led by 6-foot-7 senior Colt Barnhill.

“Barnhill is a great player, a good kid and a fierce competitor,” Thacker said. “We will have our hands full with him.”

But Barnhill won’t be the only player the Viks have to keep their eyes on. With nine players over six foot, the Raiders clearly have the height advantage.

“We have to handle their height with ours,” Thacker said. “We are going to have to take care of the basketball and shoot a much higher percentage then we have been.”

Rowan County’s three-peat Championship teams from 1987-89 will be introduced and honored before the 7:30 p.m. varsity tip off.

On Saturday, Rowan is slated to travel to Menifee to face Bryan Station.

“They are big huge guys,” Thacker said. “I think we are capable of playing big. Corey and Cody (Hunter) played well together on Tuesday, so that’s another lineup option we have as we move on down the road.”
