Lady Vikings take Fleming and Lewis at home

By Leeann Tanner - Staff Writer

The Lady Vikings moved to 15-5 on the season with two big wins at home this week.

On Monday night, Rowan’s gals took down Fleming County, 66-40.

The Lady Viks built an early lead but only hit 2-for-14 at the line in the first half. They went into the third with a 31-25 lead.

“We just couldn’t get the ball in the hole like we usually do,” Coach Scott Tackett said. “We started converting our shots in the second half and were able to hole them.”

Natasha Kissinger led the Lady Vikings in scoring with a career-high 30 points.

“We were the better basketball team,” Tackett said. “Fleming plays hard, but they are small and had trouble scoring. We tried to put our kids in position to be effective. We have high percentage shooting for the most part, but we didn’t convert that in this game.”

On Tuesday, the gals in green beat down Lewis County, 81-38.

The Lady Vikings jumped out to a 48-14 lead by the end of the second quarter. Kissinger put up 22 points in the first half, outscoring Lewis County with her points alone.

“Lewis plays a young game,” Tackett said. “They only have a couple of upper classmen. We are a senior veteran team with three years of training in the weight room. Physically we out matched them."

Kaitlyn Muncy put up 13 points and Adri Neely had 12. Tierra Hamilton sank 10 for the Lady Vikings.

Tackett was able to play his entire bench during the Lewis County match up, finishing the game with two eighth graders, two freshmen and a sophomore on the court.

“We had some of our seasoned sophomores in,” Tackett said. “Stevee Townsend and Jade Turner both played big minutes for us and that will help out a lot down the road.”

The Lady Vikings travel to Lexington Christian tonight (Friday) for a 7:30 p.m. match up. The Lady Eagles are 16-4 on their season, ranking third in the 11th Region.

“They’ve got probably the best basketball player in the state,” Tackett said. “Sara Beth Barnette is 6-foot-2 and can play inside and out. Any time you can face players like that it makes your team that much better. We are going to go down there with a good chance to win.”
