Sept. 28, 2012 — District play is in full swing, and its time for Rowan County and its fan to pack up for a trip to Greenup County to take on the Musketeers.
In this chaotic and crazy world of Kentucky high school football, there is no place to reflect upon the past, but instead, the most important matter at hand is the now.
The tough loss to Ashland Blazer last week must be forgotten, for this week there is an opponent, which has suffered nothing but downs this season, and may be very hungry to pick up a win, especially in front of its home crowd.
At 0-6, Greenup County is a team reeling and looking for something positive to come its way. Want to know how bad things are in Musketeer land? Well, a quarterback change midway through the season is definitely not a sign that things are going well for your squad.
Which brings us to our next point. This change at quarterback also probably brought the biggest threat for which the Vikings must prepare.
Despite being outscored 98-0 over its past two outings, new Greenup quarterback Matt Lawson has potential to scamper for big yardage. In all honesty, this is the only notable weapon that Greenup County possesses on a team in disarray.
On the flip side, this leaves Rowan County with two simple keys to victory this week:
1. Play solid offense
2. Play solid defense
From the two points above, I assume you realize its pretty simple. On paper, the Vikings are better than the Musketeers in just about every conceivable category. What does this mean? Well, in a nutshell, the green and white must simply run the ball well and keep down turnovers, while the defense must simply contain outside scramble opportunities and put pressure on Lawson.
Facing a defense that has allowed a lot of points this season, it could be a night of fun-filled frolics to the end zone for the Vikings and its fans.
At 2-4, and 0-1 in district play, Head Coach Kyle Singleton and his crew are seeking a rebound game, and this Friday’s road trip could serve that purpose quite well.
