July 31, 2012 — After starting the season 3-5, the Rowan County Lady Vikings softball squad engineered quite the turnaround to compile another stupendous season.
Despite suffering a heartbreaking loss in the 63rd District finals, Head Coach Larry Slone led a team of mostly freshman and sophomores to a record 24-16, in addition to a run to the second round of the 16th Region Tournament.
One particular standout on this year’s team was sophomore pitcher Morgan Mitchell.
Backed by a solid defensive unit, Mitchell stood tall on the mound for the Lady Vikes, delivering consistent play throughout the majority of the season.
In recognition of the best players in the area, The Morehead News’ sister paper, the Ashland Daily Independent, has coaches from local schools select who they feel should be recognized for outstanding play during the season.
A few weeks back, Mitchell’s solid play was recognized as the All-Area Team was announced.
Joining some of the area’s best, including All-Area Co-Player of the Year Ashland’s Kelsee Hammonds, the Rowan junior-to-be finds herself among what are sure to be some tough future competitors.
Mitchell follows former Lady Vikes All-Area member Ashley Adkins, as she was the only Rowan County player to make the squad of elite regional players.
Mitchell commented on her making the All-Area Team, saying it is a fulfilling accomplishment to have the honor.
“It was definitely an honor to make the All-Area Team, especially considering the fact I wasn't expecting it,” Mitchell said. “We had a good year and that is what was important. Now, I just have to keep working and look forward to next year.”
Boyd County saw its coach Geoff Stewart take home Coach of the Year honors, while Lady Lion sophomore terror Taylor Wheeler split Player of the Year honors with Hammonds.
You can catch Mitchell and the rest of her Lady Viking crew when they take the field next spring for the 2013 high school softball season.
