Nine members of the Toni-cise fitness team traveled to the Bluegrass Muscle Classic in Lexington Oct. 24. Kevin Rogers, Matt Martin, Adam Knipp, Jim Mitchell, Melissa Alderman, Angela Hall, Valerie Little, Toni Wheeler, and Brittany Tate performed a two-minute exhibition during the evening events to show off the skills in Morehead.
“Our theme was Morehead in the building,” Wheeler, the team trainer said. “We performed skills like gymnastics, jumps, strength holds, martial arts, body building, figure fitness and weight lifting. We wanted to show everyone that you don’t have to live in a bigger city to participate in this type of fitness.”
Tricky Jackson, an ambassador from the sport, hosted the event. Jackson was so impressed by the Toni-cise team; they were invited to perform again next year.
Wheeler’s team started up in the spring and has grown from five women to 20 active members, including seven men.
“We have been training together and having fundraisers to support the group,” Wheeler said. “We have had car washes and we ran a 5K together. When the race was postponed for weather we even went over to the gym and ran the distance on the treadmills.”
The Toni-cise team trains out of Every Bodies and Every Ladies Fitness centers in Morehead. Wheeler also hosts classes out of Davis Karate Studio. Her newest class, Toni Spice, uses zumba beats while emphasizing cardio and more fight moves to appeal to both sexes. The class is Monday nights at 7 p.m.
Toni-cise is also targeting a younger group this year by sponsoring Morehead Youth League’s Spurs’ Cheerleaders.
The team will travel to the Kentucky Muscle fitness competition in Louisville Nov. 13. They are also prepping for the Northern KY bodybuilding Championships in Covington in March, one of the biggest contests held by the National Physique Committee.
