The Vikings put on a good show in two pre-season scrimmages last week.
On Wednesday, Rowan’s guys faced off with Wolfe County in two 16-minute halves. The Viks fell by seven points in the first round, but tied it up in the second.
“We improved a little as the game went on,” Coach Shawn Thacker said. “We were able to see weaknesses that we needed to address, like taking care of the ball and making better shot selections.”
On Saturday, both the junior varsity and varsity teams faced off with Lafayette.
The J.V. team lost by ten in the first half and by five in the second half.
“I was really please at what I saw out of all of our kids,” Thacker said. “Lafayette has a lot of athleticism, and we were able to lead a lot down the stretch.”
The Varsity team was also defeated by Lafayette, 74-58.
Lafayette forced the Vikings into several turnovers that led to shots.
“We have a lot fewer turnovers than this time last season,” Thacker said. “Lafayette was so quick and they came right at us.”
Cody Hunter led the Vikings in scoring with 12 points. Darrell Cross and Adam Wing each put up 11 while Jacob Ginter sank seven. Josh Ford had five while Jason Egan and Corey Hunter put up three each. Danny Weigel, Jon Stacy, and Brad Hutchison each had two.
“We have some kids too that are just getting in from fall sports,” Thacker said. “It will take us a little time to get where we want to be. We found some answers during our scrimmages that will help us produce and handle the pressure.”
The Vikings open regular season action tonight (Tuesday) at Fleming County.
“It should be a good little rivalry game,” Thacker said. “They played Prestonsburg in the pre-season and showed off some talented players. They will have a good year, and it should be a good game.”
Tip off at Fleming tonight is set for 7:30 p.m.
