Morehead State Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson announced Wednesday that he has extended the contract of women’s golf coach Stephanie Barker through the spring of 2013.
“I’d like to thank President Wayne Andrews, Brian Hutchinson and the athletic department staff. Their support and interest has been invaluable,” Barker said. “With everyone's help we have built a strong foundation for our young program. My family and I appreciate the opportunity to be involved with Morehead State and are thrilled about continuing our commitment here.”
Barker’s Eagles had a tremendously successful fall season. The Eagles finished first or tied for first three times (two tournaments and one tri-match). Freshman Marisa Kamelgarn earned OVC Golfer of the Week twice and finished in the top 10 in all but one tournament. She took medalist honors at the Cincinnati Fall Classic.
“None of the success that we’ve had as a program in the past two years would be possible without my players,” Barker said. “I’ve been fortunate to have a great group of girls, both as talented golfers and as teammates. They deserve all of the credit for rebuilding this program so quickly.”
Barker, who spent 2007-08 building the team, took the 2008-09 team to a surprising third-place finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament last spring.
“We hired Stephanie to resurrect a program that existed briefly in the early 1980s with the expectations that it would take her a few years to build a program that was capable of competing for OVC Championships,” Hutchinson said. “It took her just two years to build a competitive program and now in her third year she has turned the women’s golf team into one of the teams to beat in the OVC.”
Morehead State resumes their schedule in the spring, starting Feb. 21-23 at College of Charleston’s Kiawah Invitational.
