The Lady Viking volleyball team found their rhythm this week with two wins on the road.
On Tuesday night, the gals in green traveled to Lewis County to nab a 2-0 victory.
In the first set, Rowan pulled ahead early, but stumbled and Lewis battled back.
“I think we have started a trend that we are trying very hard to break,” Assistant Coach Dusty Coyle told The Morehead News. “We start strong and the girls let up whenever they get a good lead. When they buckle down and focus though, they are hard to beat.”
Rowan’s gals barely got the 25-21 win in the first set, but came into the second focused to win 25-10.
“We had been working very early on transition defense and offense,” Coyle said. “We have been taking what we have worked on this week and applying it to the court. Our defense is the best I have seen it and when their offense is on they are up to beating most teams out there.”
On Wednesday, the Lady Vikings traveled to Fleming County for another 2-0 victory.
The match up was almost a mirror to Tuesday’s game. In the first set, Rowan was up by 11 and let the Lady Panthers come very close to taking the win away. Coyle used the break in between sets to focus the team and the Lady Vikings took the second set, 25-16.
“We got a late start this season so our learning curve was forced to shrink,” Coyle said. “Most teams are already through the experimental part of finding their lineups. We are just now finding out where the girls are naturally lining up. We still have some minor modifications left to make, but we are in a good place and I am excited about where we are.”
The Lady Vikings returned to their home court Thursday (after press time.) Rowan played host to the 4-4 Lady Raiders of East Carter.
“We are going to go up against every team like they are a tough team,” Coyle said. “We are going to play our game at our home. It doesn’t matter who our opponent is, we should have strong offense and defense and we will come away with the win.”
The Rowan County Middle School team held their first-ever home game Wednesday night. The seventh grade team took a 2-0 win over Harrison County.
The leading servers for the seventh grade team were Carley Anderson and Summer Goodan.
The eighth grade team fell in a very close three-set match.
The RCMS Lady Vikings will host Scott County tonight at RCSHS. The seventh grade game will begin at 6 p.m.
