Tyndall adds transfer Kelly to men's basketball roster

Morehead State men’s basketball coach Donnie Tyndall has announced the addition of Drew Kelly to the Eagle basketball team. A transfer from Miami University (Ohio), Kelly will be eligible to play next December after sitting out for a season per NCAA transfer rules.

“We are very excited to add Drew to our basketball family,” Tyndall said. “We recruited him very hard out of high school. We’re glad he made the decision to be an Eagle at this point in his career.”

A 6-7, 253-pound forward from Franklin, Tenn., Kelly was being red-shirted by the Redhawks this season. He was an all-star standout at Centennial High School in Tennessee was named 2009 Mr. Basketball in Tennessee. Kelly averaged 31.0 points per game and 15.0 rebounds per game his senior season for the Cougars. A two-time, all-state selection, he was district MVP all four years. He led his team to two 20 win seasons his sophomore and junior years and scored a career high 67 points against Dorsey High School on Dec. 20, 2008. He was named team captain all four years and was also a four-year letter winner. Kelly also lettered four years in football and one year in track and field.

“I’m very eager to play for coach Tyndall and to be an Eagle,” Kelly said. “I hope to help Morehead State continue to compete for OVC Championships and NCAA berths.”

Kelly has a strong basketball tradition in his family. His father Brian Kelly is the head varsity boys basketball coach at nearby Fleming County High School. His grandfather, the late Lake Kelly, was a long-time high school and collegiate coach, including serving as head coach at Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay for several years. Lake Kelly also coached at Oral Roberts. In addition, Drew Kelly’s uncle, Chad Clifton, is a left tackle for the Green Bay Packers.

“Not only is Drew a great player, but he’s an outstanding student with tremendous basketball bloodlines,” Tyndall said. “We are thrilled he’s chosen to bring that into the Morehead State family.”

Morehead State is 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
