Oct. 23, 2012 — This past weekend, while there was soccer and volleyball titles to be had in the 16th Region, another fall sport was having its biggest event of the season as well.
Saturday afternoon, the Rowan County girls and boys cross country teams made their way to Mason County for the Area 7 meet.
There were two particularly bright spots on display for the green and white runners, both experienced and new to the varsity 5K.
Shellie Deharte, Rowan County senior, endured for another solid performance in the 5K event, coming up just 20 seconds shy of a win to finish third individually with a time of 16:58. Dehart’s performance also helped to boost Rowan County to a fourth place finish as a team.
While there were many experienced runners to face off against on the girls side, a RCMS seventh grader impressed in the field, during only her second varsity race of the season.
Janae Graham finished 11th overall, pushing forth for a 21:15 finish time.
Both Dehart and Graham were honored with All-Area team accolades for the event. Dehart’s finishing time was also a personal best for the four-year runner.
