Oct. 19, 2012 — Rowan County’s Janae Graham took the big leap from junior varsity to varsity this past weekend, picking up a first place win in Tuesday’s evenings Run for the Barrel in Winchester.
Graham impressed onlookers with a 21:45.28 finish in the Girls 5K run, outpacing the nearest competitor by nearly 20 seconds. Makenzie Summers and Sarah Hallock also finished in the top twenty for the Lady Vikings.
Rowan County Head Coach Shawn Thacker said Graham’s performance was beyond exceptional for her first varsity run.
“Janae really ran a great race, and impressed a lot of people doing it,” Thacker said. “She is a gifted athlete, and I was happy to see here do so well in her first varsity go-around.”
RCMS runners also had a nice showing, picking up a first place finish in the event for the middle school tier in the
Samantha Patrick finished first for the middle school Vikes, while Karli Baldridge finished seventh, Madison Burchett finished eighth and Mackenzie Kline finished 14th. The combined results for RCMS’s girls resulted in a first place finish in the 2500-meter run.
Rowan County is set to compete in this weekend’s Area 7 Cross Country meet in Mason County.
