Most state offices will be closed Friday, Sept. 3, as part of the state’s budget balancing plan to furlough state government workers a total of six days in Fiscal Year 2011, but Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife conservation officers will be in the fields and on the water for the beginning of the Labor Day weekend, one of the busiest recreational times of the year.
Gov. Steve Beshear selected the Friday of Labor Day weekend as a mandatory state furlough day in hopes of lessening the impact to citizens who rely on state services, and to take advantage of the additional operational savings in decreased energy usage.
The Labor Day weekend is the traditional beginning of the fall and winter hunting seasons. It is the opening weekend of mourning dove season and one of the busiest boating weekends on the state’s lakes and rivers.
Department offices, information call center, licensing branch and the Salato Wildlife Education Center will be closed Friday, Sept. 3, in observance of the furloughs.
“Our officers need to be out and available as this busy weekend get underway,” said Department Commissioner Dr. Jon Gassett. “They will do their part in saving money by observing a furlough day at a later time when the impact to the public is lessened.”

After defeating Ashland on its home court in its own tournament back in December, the Vikings knew the Tomcats wanted revenge. Tuesday night, Rowan County fell victim to a hostile home team, as it fell for only the second time in 15 games, losing to Ashland Blazer, 73-58.

It was business as usual for Lakeside’s girls as they easily defeated rival Bluegrass Christian at home Monday night, 53-34. In front of its home crowd on the campus of Lakeside Christian Academy, the Lady Falcons grabbed its 16th win of the season in preparation for another run toward a KCAA Championship.
