Rowan gals beat Eagles, tie the Tigers

September 3, 2010 —     The Lady Vikings are 3-2-1 on the season.

On Saturday, the gals in green took down Johnson Central, 3-0 on the road.

Rowan went into the match up a little worried about the Lady Eagle’s field. Johnson Central has an artificial turf, which speeds up the game.

“We really responded to the speed well,” Coach Tammy Alburg said. “We adjusted well and maintained a calm demeanor.”

Johnson Central has a notoriously aggressive team, but the Lady Vikings were able to brush off their frustration and focus on the game.

“Our execution was awesome,” Alburg said. “We were patient and worked off the ball. It was by far the best game we have played all year.”

Hayley Devaney, Teagan Dolan and Hannah Neeper each had one goal for the Lady Vikes. Ashley Adkins was in goal for the shutout win.

On Tuesday night, Rowan played host to Paintsville for a 1-1 tie.

Devaney scored the Lady Viking’s solo goal of the game.

“We were glad to get out of there without a loss,” Alburg said. “They scored and we got in a hole, but we refused to lose. We battled back. It was frustrating not to take that extra notch and get the win, but a tie is better than a loss, that’s for sure.”

Rowan’s gals executed well and dominated in the midfield while holding possession for most of the match up.

“We are still having trouble putting the ball in the back of the net,” Alburg said. “We are still looking for that one person who can step up and say, pass it to me and it’s going in. We are still a little passive at this point.”

The junior varsity team also saw action on Tuesday, grabbing a 3-2 win over Fleming County.

“The younger kids are doing great and everyone is having a good time,” Alburg said. “They are learning and growing and we are excited to have a J.V. program this season. It has been a wonderful experience for all of us.”

Sarah Ward led the Lady Vikings in scoring with two goals and Mary Damron had one. Courtney Riddle was in goal, allowing just two goals.

Rowan was slated to host St. Patrick on Wednesday, but the game has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m.

“It will probably be a really competitive game,” Alburg said. “They were very aggressive last season.  We left there with an L so we would like to return the favor. They play on a much smaller field, so hopefully we can stretch them out and use our longer field to our advantage.”
