Seventh grade Vikes 3-1

September 7, 2010 —     On Aug. 26, the RCMS seventh grade Vikings played host to the Comets from West Carter.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Vikings tried their version of the Pistol offense, which quickly became the ‘Pop Gun’. The offense began on the Viking 45 yard line, after three plays had to punt from their own 10. In came the Viking defense, which caused a Comet fumble. The Vikings went to their power game led by quarterback Devin Helvey, and running backs Brandon Loper, Jeffery Fraley, Caleb Jones and Kyler Hodges began a drive that changed the game’s field position. Positive runs by each back moved the ball deep into West Carter territory. Turnovers again tried to determine the game’s outcome, this time hitting the Vikings as they fumbled an opportunity to score, but tough defense helped West Carter return the favor as they fumbled back to the home team. Taking over in a scoreless game with less than 4 minutes in the half the Vikings drove 45 yards to take the lead with a Brandon Loper 4 yard run with 11 seconds remaining in the half. Caleb Jones added the 2 point conversion for a Rowan 8-0 halftime lead.

The second half belonged to the Vikings and their defense. With the exception of one play where the Comet quarterback ran a bootleg around the left end for a 60 yard score, the defense dominated by keeping the visitor’s offense inside their known 35 most of the second half. West Carter never crossed the 50 yard line the second half. Caleb Jones scored the second Viking td with a nifty 16 yard run and Brandon Loper caught his second pass of the game for the 2 point conversion making to score Rowan Co. 16 – West Carter 8. The Vikings ended the game at the West Carter 2 yard line.

With the win, the seventh grade Vikings improved their record to 2-1. Previous games were an opening season win over Fleming Co. 16-0 and a 24-0 lost to Elkhorn City at the Bourbon Bowl.

The seventh grade Vikings pushed their 2010 home record to 3-0 and their overall record to 3-1 with their 30-0 win over Nicholas County last Thursday night. Overcoming two first quarter turnovers, the Viking offense managed a game leading drive on its third possession of the game.

At the 1:53 point of the first quarter, quarterback Devin Helvey exploded around right end on an option play for 40 yards and the game’s first touchdown. Jeffery Fraley muscled the middle for the two point conversion. Vikings led 8-0. The defense struck next with a Blake Carver interception which allowed the Vikings offense the opportunity to put together a 70-yard drive to lead 16-0. Big plays in the drive were a 15-yard Fraley run, a pass from Helvey to Loper netted another 15 yards, and Caleb Jones breaks through the Nicholas defense for 35 yards and the TD. Fraley added the 2-point PAT.

With a 16-0 lead, the Viking defense took over the game stopping Nicholas on its’ first possession of the second half, then proceeded to block the punt. The offense went to work scoring at the 5:13 mark of the third quarter. The big play was a 36-yard pass from Caleb Jones to Brandon Loper. Later in the fourth period, Devin Helvey struck again with a 5 yard run to make the score Rowan 28-0. Casey Back closed out the scoring with the two-point conversion. With Nicholas driving late in the fourth, Jacob Jennings intercepts Nicholas to end their threat and the game preserving the 30-0 shutout.

The Vikings’ next action is Thursday night at Lewis County. Members of this year’s team are: Trevor Stephens, Jeffery Fraley, Brandon Loper, Casey Back, Clayton Frye, Cody Taylor, Logan Lovely, Micah McNabb, Jacob Clark, Derek Williams, Zach Johnson, Andrew Dillion, Nathan Pennington, Dalton Richards, Justin Hutson, Kayne Perry, Jordan Wages, Caleb Jones, Austin Alderson, Jacob Jennings, Anthony Sierocki, Andrew Kelsey, Jesse Kidd,  Tyler Stevens, Kyler Hodges, Devin Helvey, Andrew Sexton, and Jordon Wise.
