Eagle baseball swept in 9-1 loss to EKU

May 1, 2012 — Eastern Kentucky took advantage of three defensive miscues in the fifth inning to plate five runs and defeat Morehead State baseball 9-1 Sunday at Allen Field. The win gave the Colonels the series sweep and gave MSU its fourth straight loss.

Eagle starter Garrick Whittle took the loss, despite allowing just one earned run. Whittle fanned five and walked two in 4.2 innings. The loss was his third of the season.

Catcher Drew Williams drove in the first run of the contest in the second inning on slow roller to short. His groundout scored shortstop Chase Greenwell, who advanced to third on a throwing error by EKU catcher Sean Hagen.

Hagen plated a pair of EKU runs in Sunday’s finale. He went 2-for-4 and recorded two doubles.

EKU (22-19, 12-6 OVC) starter Shane Grimm earned the win. He pitched a complete game, allowed six hits, fanned four and yielded an unearned run.

MSU right fielder Luke Bainer had the Eagles only multi-hit outing. He went 2-for-4 with a double.

The Eagles (24-19, 9-9 OVC) continue their Ohio Valley Conference season as they travel to Cookeville, Tenn., to face Tennessee Tech beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
