NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior Ty Proffitt scored a team-high 18 points and the Morehead State men’s basketball team knocked down its first six three-point attempts en route to a 75-69 victory over Norfolk State on Tuesday night at Echols Hall.
The Eagles improve to 11-11 overall, while the Spartans fall to 15-6 on the campaign. NSU is 7-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this season and was previously 7-1 at home.
Proffitt drilled all four field-goal tries in the first half and finished 5-of-6 for the contest. He also swished 4-of-5 attempts from beyond the arc.
Sophomore Drew Kelly contributed 15 points on 6-of-9 from the field for the Eagles, while junior Marsell Holden added 12 on 4-of-7 from long distance.
Freshman Angelo Warner recorded a career-best 12 rebounds to help secure the road win for MSU, while junior Devon Atkinson matched a career high with four assists.
Morehead State continued its recent dominance in the rebounding department. The Eagles posted a 33-24 advantage and are now +86 on the glass over the past 15 contests.
MSU shot 54 percent (25-of-46) for the contest, including 61 percent (11-of-18) from three-point range. NSU made 45 percent (24-of-53) overall, including 40 percent (10-of-25) from beyond the arc.
The Spartans (11-of-23) were +5 in free-throw attempts, but the Eagles were +3 in makes (14-of-18).
Senior Chris McEachin led Norfolk State with 19 points on 7-of-15 from the floor. The game featured three ties and eight lead changes. The Spartans drew to within one on multiple occasions late, but the Eagles continued to hold the upper hand by knocking down free throws.
Morehead State’s biggest lead of 10 points came on the first bucket of the second half.
The Eagles return to Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday when they host Tennessee Tech at 3 p.m. The contest will televised nationally by ESPNU and all fans are encouraged to wear black as part of the “Black Out” promotion at Johnson Arena.
