July 6, 2012 — Morehead State University’s Kentucky Folk Art Center is accepting registrations for a summer arts program for children aged 9-12.
The Summer Arts Studio will be held July 10, 17, 24 and 31 from 10-11:30 a.m.
A student exhibition and reception will be held Friday, Aug. 3, at 10 a.m. to celebrate the conclusion of the program and will feature famed Kentucky folk artist Minnie Adkins.
Preregistration is required by contacting Susan Hawkins, KFAC’s outreach educator, at 606-783-8719 or sl.hawkins@moreheadstate.edu.
Sign-up registration also is available in person at the front desk at The Kentucky Folk Art Center. Registration will close on Friday, June 29. The cost for the program is $5 per child, per session, and advance payment for the sessions is due by Friday, July 6. Slots for the program are limited and will be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis.
This year, children participating in the Summer Arts Studio will focus on artwork that is displayed in the Kentucky Folk Art Center. Each week the students will learn about a new Kentucky folk artist and have the opportunity to view and discuss the artwork within the museum setting. Students will have hands-on experience with various art media to create their own personal artwork inspired by the work they have learned about at each session.
“I am looking forward to connecting students to the museum and their own artwork. Learning about new artists and how they create artwork, encourages artistic exploration in student work. I am excited to see how students will express their thoughts and ideas through their own work,” said Hawkins. “As a new addition to the program, we are looking forward to inviting the community to see the students’ artwork and to have students meet a Kentucky folk artist at the conclusion of our summer program.”
Kentucky Folk Art Center is a cultural, educational and economic development service of Morehead State University. The Center is open Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 606-783-2204 or visit kyfolkart.org.
