Edith Marie Wilson Ashcraft Black
1921-2009

MOREHEAD – Edith Marie Wilson Ashcraft Black, 87, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 15, 2009 in the Life Care Center.

She was born on June 16, 1921 in Rowan County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Joe and Libby Christian Wilson.

Mrs. Black was a retired sales clerk having worked at several different stores in town, including the Big Store Clothing, The Shoe Store, Pelfrey’s and she managed the Beverly Shop for several years. Edith did alterations for Imperial Cleaners and Stephen’s and she also worked at Cowden’s Manufacturing, Model Laundry & Dry Cleaners and for Barb & Larry Brown. She was also a homemaker and enjoyed doing many different crafts, sewing, quilting and reading the Bible.

Edith was an active member of the First Free Will Baptist Church, where she taught the Primary Class for over 40 years and she was President of the Women’s Auxiliary for many terms. She and her family sang together in church and in many of the churches in the community. She held several offices in the Free Will Bluegrass Conference and was active in getting the Bluegrass Women’s Auxiliary Conference formed. She was a board member of the Child Evangelism Organization and the Child Evangelism Camp at Blue Stone. Edith loved the Lord, her church and her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, William (Art) Ashcraft in 1952 and Paul Black in 1987, two daughters, Paula Marie Black, who was stillborn and Betty Ashcraft Karrick in 2006, two brothers, Edward Wilson and Elmer Wilson and one sister, Edna White.

Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Ashcraft of Morehead, one grandson, Nathan Karrick and his wife, Stephanie of Fleming County, one great-granddaughter, Brooke Nicole Karrick, her son-in-law, Brooks Karrick of Fleming County, four step-children, Jack Black and his wife, Norma of Toronto, Ohio, Sonny Conn and his wife, Clara of Morehead, Tony Conn and his wife, Sandy of Independence, Missouri and Peggy Nawlin of Houston, Texas, three sisters, Esther Phillips and her husband, Luther of Centerville, Ohio, Margaret Cline and her husband, Raymond of Mansfield, Ohio and Corinne Wilson of Dayton, Ohio and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, January 18, 2009 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. David Starcher, Brother Brad Bennington and Rev. Rick Stone officiating. Burial was in the Jones Cemetery at Midland.

Pallbearers were Nathan Karrick, Jerry Wilson, John Paul White, Mitch Cline, Mike Cline, Dwain Wilson and Sanford Bentley and honorary pallbearers were The Women’s Auxiliary, Bob Christian, Rick Stone, Mike North, Greg McMahan and Jimmy Crosthwaite.

Kayla Renee Hinton
1986-2009

OLIVE HILL – Kayla Renee Hinton, age 22, of Vincent Hollow, Olive Hill, Kentucky, passed away January 14, 2009, at St. Augustine, Florida.

Kayla was born September 22, 1986, in Rowan County, Kentucky, and is the daughter of Barry and Veronica Rivers Hinton. Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother, Phillip Hinton of Olive Hill, Kentucky; one nephew, Dominic Hinton; and maternal grandparents, Forrest Rivers of Olive Hill, Kentucky, and Shirley Withrow Smith and husband Lester of Haldeman, Kentucky.

Kayla was a graduate of West Carter High School and attended Morehead State University.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Don Rivers officiating. Burial was in the Hinton Cemetery at Haldeman, Kentucky.

Pallbearers were Jeff Rivers, James Rivers, Bob Rivers, Micheal Smith, Keith Hinton, and Vaughn Hinton.

Visitation was Sunday, January 18, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Kenneth Lee Oldham
1985-2009

MOREHEAD – Kenneth Lee Oldham, age 23, of Morehead, KY, formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away on January 14, 2009.

Kenny was born June 22, 1985, in Charlotte, NC, the son of Mark and Cheryl Denise Hamrick. He has been a resident of Morehead since 2000 and attended Rowan County Senior High.

In addition to his parents, Mark and Cheryl Denise Hamrick, Kenny is survived by one sister, Alicia Hamrick; and one brother, Tristin Hamrick, all of Morehead, KY; his father, Jeffery Lee Oldham of Midland, NC; grandparents, Danny and Alice Prince of Matthews, NC, Terry Oldham of Hickory, NC, Ned and JoAnn Hamrick of Denver, NC.

A gathering for family and friends will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at his grandparents’ home at 2926 Plentywood Dr., Matthews, NC.

A Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at Mt. Pisgah Christian Church, 7855 Bullfork Rd., in Morehead, KY, with the Rev. James DeAtley officiating.

Internment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Columbarium in Morehead, KY.

William Milzie “Bill” Perkins
1918-2009

MOREHEAD – William Milzie “Bill” Perkins, 90, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2009 in the Life Care Center after an illness of several months.

He was born on March 12, 1918 in Rowan County, Kentucky, a son of the late Clarence Ellington (Benny) Perkins and Versie Riddle Perkins.

Mr. Perkins was a farmer and a United States Army Veteran having served during World War II. He was a member of the United Baptist Church, former Rowan County Farm Bureau Director and Rowan County Soil Conservation Board Member. He was instrumental in conservation and using the land wisely and he also enjoyed gardening and traveling.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Clell Perkins and three sisters, Hazel Lewis, Lela Pearl Perkins and Anna Newman.

Survivors include his wife, Murrell Roe Perkins, whom he married on January 29, 1946, of Morehead, four sons, Glennis Perkins and his wife, Cara of Fairfield, Iowa, Jerry Perkins and his wife, Joyce, Roy Perkins and his wife, Rita and Troy Perkins and his wife, Glenna all of Morehead, five brothers, Millard Perkins and Cleo Perkins both of Springfield, Ohio, Raymond Perkins of Lawrenceburg, Herbert Perkins of Shelbyville and Wilburn Perkins of Benton, Arkansas, two sisters, Olive Scaggs of Mt. Sterling and Grace Veneaua of Boston, Massachusetts, seven grandchildren, Angela Wages, Tracy Perkins, Kevin Perkins, Corey Perkins, Nathan Perkins, Justin Perkins and Morgan Perkins, eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 A.M. Monday, January 19, 2009 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Elder Louie Bear, Elder Eury Barker and Elder Oathar Messer officiating. Burial was in the Jones Cemetery on Jones Ridge. Full military rites were conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.

Pallbearers were Angela Wages, Tracy Perkins, Kevin Perkins, Corey Perkins, Nathan Perkins, Justin Perkins, Morgan Perkins and Tyler Wages and honorary pallbearers were Oscar Gamble, Andy Slusher, Johnny Cox, Charlie Winkleman, Sam Hughes and Wayne Black.
