Clarence “Hobert” Brown
1939-2009


MOREHEAD – Clarence “Hobert” Brown, age 69, of Mt. Hope Road, Morehead, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 23, 2009, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born March 16, 1939, in Rowan County, Kentucky, the son of Bill and Liddie Ramey Brown. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Brown and James Brown.

Hobert is survived by four sisters: Hazel (Delbert) Ramey of Amherst, Ohio; Wanda (Ira) Hudnall of Crestline, Ohio; Susan (John) Chullen of Benton, Illinois; and Anna Day of Racine, Wisconsin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Also surviving are two sisters-in-law: Sue Brown of Ashland, Kentucky, and Etta Brown of Morehead, Kentucky.

Hobert was an avid Bluegrass music fan and loved his Martin guitar. He liked to take out his guitar and play a tune for you when he had a chance.

He attended Charity Baptist Church on Lick Fork. He loved going to church and witnessing to others about the Lord.

Hobert served in the U.S. Army, worked for Kasper Foundry in Elyria, Ohio, for several years, then moved back to Morehead, where he was born and raised. He also worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Rowan County, where he could work in the great outdoors that he loved so much.

Funeral services were conducted 1:30 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Robert Kidd and the Rev. Willis Adkins officiating.

Burial was in New Alfrey Cemetery. Pallbearers were Delbert Ramey, John Chullen, Richard Day, Tony Ramey, Chris McCleese, and Jon-Paul Ramey.

Visitation was Saturday, January 24, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Hayward Hook
1927-2009

MOREHEAD – Hayward Hook, age 81, of KY 801 South, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2009, at his residence.

He was born June 17, 1927, in Rowan County, Kentucky, son of the late Charles Walter and Nancy Susan Boggs Hook. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bert, Glenn, and Clarence Hook, and two sisters, Esther Ellington and Carrie Strong. Also, a daughter, Stephanie Hook, passed away in 1955.

Hayward is survived by his wife of 55 years, June Ball Hook, whom he married August 8, 1953; two sons, David Hook and Rebecca Smith of Milton, West Virginia, and her daughter Kimberly also of Milton and Dan and Jenny Hook of Morehead, Kentucky, and their expected child in August, Haydan Cameron Hook.

Other survivors include two brothers, John Hook of Morehead, Kentucky, and Edward Hook of Bellingham, Washington, and two sisters, Edna Hardman of Dayton, Ohio, and Virginia Grippen of Endicott, New York.

Hayward was a Rowan County businessman and also owned several farms in Rowan and Fleming counties. He was the former owner of Hook Lumber in Morgan and Rowan counties, and former co-owner of Hooks’, Lines & Sinkers. He is the current owner of Captain Hook’s Storage and Lakeview Motel on Cave Run Lake.

He enjoyed visiting country stores, watching football, and talking Republican politics.

Hayward was a member of Kentucky Farm Bureau and Kentucky and National Republican Party Associations.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Roger Ball, Brother Tracy Fannin and Pastor Wade Muncy officiating. Burial will follow in New Alfrey Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Dan Hook, David Hook, Mike Pack, Curt Hutchinson, Gary Lewis II, Mike Tackett, Bill Pigman, and Danny Warren. Honorary pallbearers: Randolph Reed, Dean Ball, and Tim Ball.

Visitation for Hayward Hook is after 5 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351.

Hildreth Fern Howard Marcum
1937-2009


MOREHEAD – Hildreth Fern Howard Marcum, age 71, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away Friday, January 23, 2009, at Kindred Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.

Born December 29, 1937, in Rowan County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Orville and Peachie Black Howard.

Surviving are Fern’s husband of 53 years, Leonard Ellis Marcum, whom she married December 23, 1955; one son, Lenyol Allen Marcum of Dayton, Ohio; and 7 grandchildren.

Also surviving are three sisters, Janie Dockery of Morehead, Kentucky, Maudie Darlene Presley of Springboro, Ohio, and Anne Caskey Money of Ewing, Kentucky, and one brother, Scottie Howard of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Fern was a homemaker and member of the Miamisburg Assembly of God.

Funeral services were conducted 10 a.m. Monday, January 26, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gary McQuain officiating.

Burial was in Brown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Zack Centers, Kermit Vencil, Damon Caskey, Lenyol Marcum, Jeffery Brian Howard, and Wes Howard.

Visitation was Sunday, January 25, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
