Ronald Allen Adkins
1953-2009


MOREHEAD – Ronald Allen Adkins, age 55, of Bradley Hollow, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009, at his residence.

He was born July 14, 1953, in New Castle, Indiana, son of Hobert Adkins of Olive Hill, Kentucky, and the late Sadie Lucille Keeton Adkins. Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by one brother, Tony Jay Adkins, and one nephew, Bradley Michael Neal.

In addition to his father, Ronnie is survived by three sisters, Patricia Ann Adkins and Diana Sue Adkins, both of Louisa, Kentucky, and Debra Lynn Adkins of Olive Hill, Kentucky; three nephews, Jamie Ray Adkins, Daniel Allen Adkins, and Matthew Taylor Adkins; and one great-nephew, Jamie Ray Adkins, Jr.

He was a carpenter.

Graveside services and interment will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2009, at the Bradley Cemetery, Soldier, Kentucky, with the Rev. Phillip Fraley officiating.

Pallbearers will be Jamie Ray Adkins, Sr., Daniel Allen Adkins, Matthew Taylor Adkins, Brian Stevens, Bill Bays, and David (Buck) Caudill.

Visitation is after 10 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Morehead, Kentucky.

Katherine Cogswell Brown
1915-2009


MOREHEAD – Katherine Cogswell Brown, 94, of Owingsville passed away Friday, May 1, 2009 at Ridgeway Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility after an illness of several weeks.

She was born on March 27, 1915 in Cogswell, Kentucky, which is now the Cave Run area in Rowan County. She was the 8th child of nine children born to Joseph Pierce Cogswell and Mary Eliza Alfrey Cogswell. Mrs. Brown was a descendent of John Cogswell of New England, which made her the 12th generation in America! Early pioneers, the Cogswell family came to Kentucky in 1787. Other early Kentucky pioneers in Mrs. Brown’s lineage include the family names of Alfrey, Beadle, Hopkins, Johnson, Lewis, Manley, McKenzie, Phelps and Ramey.

Mrs. Brown seen the world change so much in her 94 years, from the horse and buggy log cabin days, to seeing man walk on the moon, not to mention the incredible technology that has revolutionized our society today. In a day when few graduated, Mrs. Brown was determined to get her education. She attended Alfrey School in the community and then had to walk 10 miles round trip to attend Farmers High School. She received High School scholarships and attended Morehead State Normal School (now Morehead State University). When Mrs. Brown was 21 years old, she received her High School diploma from Paul Blazer in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1943 she married her business partner, Charles Raymond Brown of Anderson, Indiana. The Browns owned grocery stores in Newcastle and Anderson, Indiana. They also were farmers during most of their marriage, lastly owning a farm in Bath County. Although Katherine Cogswell Brown had lived in Indiana, Michigan, and California, Kentucky was her home.

She was a member of the Morehead First Church of God and enjoyed music, gardening, flowers and reading the Bible.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Raymond Brown, who passed away on December 16, 1971, three brothers, Fred Cogswell, William Cogswell and Paul Cogswell and five sisters, Gretna Armstrong, May Roberts, Melvie Carpenter, Sally Johnson and Estelle Lewis.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Jo Willey McKenzie and her husband, Charles Ray of Owingsville, two granddaughters, Tammy Jo Kerney and her husband, Mark and Jennifer Lynn Bowell and her husband, Doug, six great-grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth Kerney Weldon and her husband, Tim, Gary Joseph Kerney, Christyn Paige Kerney, Alden Michael Kerney, Morgan Ashton Bowell and Chase Douglas Bowell and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 4, 2009 at the Midland First Church of God with Rev. Lowell Rice and Rev. Guy McKenzie officiating. Burial was in the New Alfrey Cemetery at Farmers.

Pallbearers were Michael Lee McKenzie, James Carpenter, Billy Joe Cogswell, David Lee McKenzie, Fred Gaskill and Joe Eddie McKenzie and honorary pallbearers were Gary Henry Willey, Gary Joseph Kerney and Marvin Clifton.

Faye Carey
1917-2009


OHIO - Carey, Faye (Johnson), 91 of Monroe passed away on Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Mt. Pleasant Ret. Village.

She was born on October 14, 1917 in Zilpo, Kentucky. She was a home maker and also worked for approximately 6 years as a Bank Teller for the Winter’s Bank. She attended the Breiel Blvd. First Church of God and was a member of the DORCAS (Quilting) Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Hanson Carey in 1997, her parents; Alfred “Aqua” & Cordelia (Jones) Johnson, a sister; Etta Poynter and two brothers; Ova & Audrey “Art” Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter; Deborah Carey of Monroe, her nieces and nephews; Lois Watts of North Sutton, NH, Barbara McEvoy of Springboro, OH, Cheryl Bayless of Beavercreek, OH and Douglas Johnson of Scottsdale, AZ, her sister-in-law; Mary Johnson of Beavercreek, OH and other great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 from 1:30 pm-2:30 pm at the Woodside Cemetery Chapel @ 1401 Woodside Blvd. Middletown, OH with a Celebration of Life Service also there on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 2:30 pm with Rev. Eric Newell officiating. Entombment will be in the Woodside Cemetery Mausoleum.

Jeffery Ray Hogge
1955-2009


MOREHEAD – Jeffery Ray Hogge, age 53, of Mynhier Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009, at his residence.

He was born July 9, 1955, in Menifee County, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Wilson and Sue Clark Hogge.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Tina Walker Hogge; two sons, Matthew Hogge of Rochester, Michigan, and Rob Hunter of Morehead, Kentucky; three daughters, Sue and Mikey Hall of Grayson, Kentucky, Brandy Hogge of Morehead, Kentucky, and Tabitha and Michael Mabry of Morehead, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Cole Lawhorn, Tray Mabry, the late Myka Mabry; and many others who called Jeff “Papaw.”

Other family includes siblings Billy Joe and Loretta Hogge of Marion, Indiana, the late Jerry Hogge and his wife Gayle Hogge of Owingsville, Kentucky, Mary Sue Crouch of Salt Lick, Kentucky, and her husband the late Gene Crouch, Kitty McQueen of Marion, Indiana, Georgie and Bill McKenzie of Morehead, Kentucky, the late Brenda Long and her husband Ray Long of Morehead, Kentucky, Peggy Hawley of Rochester, Michigan, and her husband the late Jim Hawley; other very special family members; and his late sisters, Renda Kay and Shirley Gayle Hogge.

Other very special friends are Carl and Jeannie Lawhorn (Children of My Heart), Larry Campbell, and the late Lee Melton.

Jeff loved his flea market yard sales and “buying and selling junk.”

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Randall Jackson and Rev. Mark Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Larry Campbell, Carl Lawhorn, Rob Hunter, Scotty Crouch, William Copher, and David Mason.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday, anytime Wednesday and before the service on Thursday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Linda Isaacs Thomas
1953-2009


MOREHEAD – Linda Isaacs Thomas, age 56, of Welch Road, Jeffersonville, Kentucky, passed away Friday, May 1, 2009, at her residence.

She was born April 11, 1953, in Richmond, Kentucky, daughter of the late Raymond Isaacs, Sr., and Sally Coyle Isaacs. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ronnie Isaacs.

Linda is survived by one daughter, Jennifer (Steve) Hager of Jeffersonville, Kentucky; one son, Geoffrey (Misty) Thomas of Winchester, Kentucky; and four grandchildren, Emilee Hager, Lillie Hager, Peyton Thomas, and Clayton Thomas.

Also surviving are one sister, Cheryl (William) Matthews of Berea, Kentucky; four brothers, Danny (Sheila) Isaacs, Raymond Jr. (Fe) Isaacs and Mason (Cherie) Isaacs, all of Berea, Kentucky, and Jason (Abby) Isaacs of Goleta, California; and several nieces and nephews.

Linda was a graduate of Annville Institute in Jackson County, Kentucky, and earned her nursing degree from Lexington Vocational College. She was a former nurse and pharmacy technician at Mary Chiles Hospital.

Linda was a member of the Montgomery County Busy Seekers Homemakers, Bath County Homemakers, Scrapbaggers Quilt Club, Sterling Ladies Investment Club and Lord’s Ladies. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, and traveling with the Adult Day Out Group. She was a member of the Gateway Christian Church.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the Gateway Christian Church with Pastor Glenn Emery officiating. Interment will follow in Machpelah Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Danny, Raymond, Mason, and Jason Isaacs and Steve Hager.

Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at the Gateway Christian Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Montgomery County Relay for Life.

Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Morehead, Kentucky.
