Gabriel Isham (Gabe) Alderman
1923-2009

MOREHEAD – Gabriel Isham (Gabe) Alderman, age 85, of Flemingsburg Road, Morehead, KY, World War II veteran and local business owner, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY, after a brief illness.

Born November 19, 1923, in Smile, KY, he was the son of the late Posey Lee and Ofphia D. Quesinberry Alderman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Alderman, David Alderman and Posie Alderman, and one sister, Lena Rivers Kinney.

Gabe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Willa Scott (Billie) McClain Alderman; his son, Darrell Alderman and JoAnn; and his daughter, Brenda Oldfield and Joey, all of Morehead, KY.

He has five grandchildren: Chase Alderman and Gabe Oldfield, both of Morehead, KY, Dara Alderman and M’Shae Alderman, both of Washington DC, and Tim Alderman of Dana, KY, and three great grandchildren: Brennan Alderman, of Dana, KY, and Henry Cloern and Cooper Cloern, both of Washington, DC. Also surviving is his long-time secretary and good friend, Joan Owens of Morehead, KY.

Mr. Alderman was the President of Morehead-based underground utilities company, G. & W. Construction, Inc. He served as President of the company for 17 years. While under Mr. Alderman’s direction, G. & W. Construction, Inc., completed more than 100 water and sewer line installation projects throughout Kentucky and Ohio.

Prior to joining G. & W. Construction, Mr. Alderman co-owned G. R. Alderman Co. with his brother, the late Robert Alderman. G. R. Alderman Co. installed the first water lines for Rowan Water, Inc., in Morehead and built numerous banks, courthouses, hospitals and schools throughout KY. Among G.R. Alderman’s local projects were the Rowan County High School (now Rowan County Middle School), Clearfield Elementary School, Peoples Bank of Morehead, University Cinema, Daniel Boone Convalescent Center (presently Life Care Center) and Morehead Methodist Church Annex.

Other construction included the Mt. Sterling Courthouse, Montgomery County High School, Monticello Elementary School, General Telephone New Dial Exchange at Meade, Hayswood Hospital Annex in Maysville, Arjay Elementary School in Pineville, Magoffin County Elementary School, Salyersville High School, Providence Elementary School in Winchester, Pulaski County High School, Georgetown High School, Newtown Elementary School in Georgetown, Jackson County Health Center, Frenchburg Health Center, Carter Caves Vacation Cottages, and Theatre, Office Building in Jenkins.

Mr. Alderman enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943. During World War II, he fought battles in Peleliu and Okinawa, and participated in the occupation of China. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1946.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Dr. Don Mantooth officiating. Burial was in Brown Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.

Pallbearers were Gary Pope, Ronnie Lewis, Nicky Pennington, Tom Taylor, Bobby Skaggs, Joe Kinder, and Denver Kinder. Bobby Alderman and Clyde Logan were honorary pallbearers.

Visitation was Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Vernie Mae Staton Hall
1907-2009


MOREHEAD – Vernie Mae Staton Hall, age 102, of Clearfield, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009, at the Life Care Center in Morehead, Kentucky.

She was born March 6, 1907, in Rowan County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Joe and Martha Cottle Staton. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Denton, Alvin, and Ray Staton, and two sisters, Lucy McKinney and Lorene Donahue.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hall, on November 27, 1966, and her son, Jack Staton.

She is survived by one brother, Arnold Staton, of Morehead, Kentucky; 3 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hall was a homemaker and member of the Church of God.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Guy McKenzie officiating. Burial will follow in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Darrell McKenzie, Roy Anderson, Jackie McKinney, Tony McKinney, John Donahue, and Elbert McKinney.

Kenneth L. Kidd Sr.
1947-2009


INDIANA - Kenneth L. Kidd Sr., 61, of Marion, Indiana, passed away June 13, 2009 at 11:21 a.m. Saturday at his residence.

Born Oct. 8, 1947 in Morehead, KY, he was the son of the late Leslie Gene and Reba (DeHart) Kidd. He was also preceded in death by two sisters.

He is survived by wife, Joyce Spencer Kidd; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Chris and Barbara Kidd of Converse, Ind., Steven Kidd of Marion, Ind., and Kenneth Kidd, Jr. of Marion, Ind.; one daughter and one son-in-law, Jennifer and Donald Bowen of Wabash, Ind.; one stepson and step daughter-in-law, Brett and Ginger Pinkerton of Marion, Ind.; three stepdaughters and two step sons-in-law, Cathy and Ron Skinner of Marion, Ind., Amy and Calvin Holloway of Amboy, Ind. and Janelle Morris of London Kentucky; one brother, Stanley Kidd of Muncie, Ind.; 5 grandchildren; and14 step-grandchildren.

Mr. Kidd was employed for the past 26 years as a crew leader at the Indiana Department of Transportation in Gas City. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and working in his garden. He was involved in Sheltie Rescue operations for the past six years.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 16 at Needham-Storey-Wamper Funeral Service Storey Chapel in Gas City, Indiana. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at Van Buren Cemetery in Van Buren, Ind. Robert Wayne “Bob” Mason
1945-2009


MOREHEAD – Robert Wayne “Bob” Mason, age 63, of Rock Fork Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, June 12, 2009, at the St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born July 11, 1945, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and was the son of the late William K. and Evelyn Smith Mason.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie L. Whisman Mason; two daughters, Shonna Dean and husband David of Morehead, Kentucky, and Lucinda Mabry of Owingsville, Kentucky; two sons, Rocky Mason and wife Sheila and Jamie Mason and wife Melody, all of Morehead, Kentucky; one sister, Betty Thurman of Evansville, Indiana; three grandchildren, Dakota Mason, Brandon Mason, and Brianna Mabry; four step grandchildren, Daniel Stevens, Patricia Stevens, Brittany Jones and Ryan Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was a caretaker at Lake Lewman. He attended the Bible Baptist Church.

Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jack Tackett officiating. Burial was in the Whisman Cemetery.

Pallbearers were David Whisman, Bob Stacy, Tyler Ginter, Ryan Jones, Eddie Stacy, Lewis Thurman, and Wendell Stacy.

Dr. Joseph Anthony Virzi II
1936-2009


JACKSONVILLE – Dr. Joseph Anthony Virzi II, a prominent Jacksonville psychiatrist, and father of Marisa (Ray) White of Morehead, KY, passed away at age 72 on June 12, 2009 in Jacksonville, FL.

Born July 19, 1936 in Chicago, IL he was the only child of the late Joseph A. Virzi and Lena Pepitone Virzi.

Dr. Virzi was a 1954 graduate from Fenwick HS in Oak Park IL, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. After graduating cum laude from Loyola University and Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in 1962, he completed his residency at Illinois State Psychiatric Institute in 1966, where he also served as Chief Resident.

He was a Lt. Commander in the US Navy and began his professional career in Jacksonville FL, establishing the first psychiatric practice in Clay County. In 1976 Dr. Virzi founded Oak Center, the city’s first psychiatric day treatment program, leading the way to accreditation by JCAHO for partial hospitalization and was elected to the board of the National Association for Partial Hospitalization.

Dr. Virzi held two board certifications with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He was a diplomat of the American Psychiatric Association and became a Life Fellow in 2000. He was also a diplomat of the American College of Forensic Examiners. He has held many offices and chaired numerous committees, including President-Elect of the Florida Psychiatric Society, President of the Jacksonville Psychiatric Society and Vice President of the Jacksonville Coalition for Mental Health. He was also President and Founder of the Florida Partial Hospitalization Association.

In addition to his professional affiliations, he enjoyed several societies and clubs of Jacksonville and was a member of Deerwood Country Club, The River Club, Ponte Vedra Club, University Club and Serenata Beach Club.

In 1998 Dr. Virzi retired from the residential treatment setting to open a private practice in the Southside of Jacksonville until 2006 when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He then retired permanently to spend more time with his wife Maria, children, grandchildren, and cherished dog “Bella,” who did not leave his side throughout his long illness.

Dr. Virzi is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Maria (Trivelli) Virzi. He is also survived by his children, Diana (Joseph) Fargardo, Marisa (Ray) White, and Joseph (Cathryn). He leaves many grandchildren, Laura, Maria, and Ray White, Morgan Sourbrine, Maya and Stella Virzi. Dr. Virzi is further survived by his brother-in-law Mauro (Rosemary) Trivelli, nieces Julie and Jennifer, and nephew Michael.

A mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9800 Baymeadows Rd., Jacksonville, FL, on Monday, June 15, 2009, at 11:00 AM.

A final Memorial will be held in Chicago, IL, at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. The date will be announced at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, 9800 Baymeadows Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32256 or the Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257.
