Barbara Richardson McKenzie
1950-2009


MOREHEAD – Barbara Ann Richardson McKenzie, age 58, of Flat Gap, Kentucky, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, at her residence.

She was born September 23, 1950, in Rowan County, Kentucky, and is the daughter of Lovena Ruth Davis Richardson of Morehead, Kentucky, and the late William L. (Bill) Richardson.

In addition to her mother, Barbara is survived by her husband, James L. McKenzie, whom she married July 5, 1969; one son, James Michael McKenzie and his wife Holly of Clearfield, Kentucky; one daughter, Jessica Ann Ferguson and her husband Kenneth Allen of Flat Gap, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Abbey and Emmy McKenzie and Matthew and Rylan Ferguson, and an expected grandson in August, Mark Brennan Ferguson.

Other survivors include three brothers, J. David Richardson and wife Suzanne of Louisville, Kentucky, Ronald Lynn Richardson of Louisville, Kentucky, Paul Keith Richardson and wife Kathy of Morehead, Kentucky and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara was a homemaker, former salesperson for AFLAC Insurance, and former substitute teacher in the Johnson County school system. She loved doing craftwork and refinishing furniture. She was a member of the Kerz Church in Sitka, were she was a Sunday school teacher.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Paul Dean Meade officiating. Burial was in Lee Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be James Michael McKenzie, Kenneth Allen Ferguson, Matthew Richardson, Britton Richardson, Derek Johnson, and Anthony Sublett.

Visitation was 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009, and from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Morehead, Kentucky 40351.

Velta Thornsberry Shay
1917-2009


MOREHEAD – Velta Thornsberry Shay, 91, of Soldier, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009 in the Life Care Center.

She was born on July 8, 1917 in Morgan County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Pete and Alice Sergent Thornsberry.

Mrs. Shay was retired from Cowden’s Manufacturing. She was a member of the Soldier Church of God and enjoyed quilting.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harlow Shay, who passed away on March 23, 1967, two brothers, Gladie Thornsberry and Kelly Thornsberry and two sisters, Vernon Snowden and Gladys Conley.

Survivors include one brother-in-law, John Conley of Lexington, two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Thornsberry of Olive Hill and Phyllis Thornsberry formerly of Dayton, Ohio and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 1, 2009 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Gayle Price officiating. Burial will follow in the Patton Cemetery at Soldier. Visitation is after 11:00 A.M. Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be great-nephews.
