Leeann Kees is beginning her third year as both teacher and administrator for Rowan County Christian Academy, and she couldn’t be happier.
“The school staff, students and parents are family to me,” Kees said. “In my 33 years of teaching, I have never been more at ease and content as I am at RCCA.”
Kees, an Ohio native, moved to Morehead in 1972 to attend Morehead State University. “I had known I wanted to teach since the fourth grade,” she said. “I graduated in three years and began teaching in Fleming County, where I stayed for 29 years.”
Kees retired from the public school system in 2004 just in time for the arrival of her first grandson. “I kept him until he turned 4. I brought him to pre-school enrollment at RCCA and saw there was a teaching position open, and I thought maybe this would be a good time to teach again.
“I really enjoyed working in the public schools, but this position also allows me to teach about the Lord, and bring children closer to God,” she said. “We are a small family here, and each child gets special attention.”
Kees said she couldn’t ask for a better staff. “These teachers want to give time of themselves to each student. They really want to be here.”
There are approximately 62 students from Rowan, Bath, Morgan and Fleming County enrolled for the 2011-2012 school year. “We have combined the kindergarten and first grade classes this year. I will be teaching a group of second, third and fourth graders,” Kees said. “It is really going to be a great combination.”
Kees’ two children and two grandchildren live in Morehead and are very close. “I will have my oldest grandson in class this year. It’s neat we will be able to ride to school together,” she added with a smile.
RCCA accepts children one year of age to fourth grade. They also provide after school care until 5:30 p.m. Anyone with question can reach Kees at 780-6566.
