Aug. 8, 2011 —
According to Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt, Jonathan Matthew Falkner, 28, of Olive Hill, was killed Friday morning in a remote area of southeastern Rowan County when a tree he had cut kicked back and struck him.
Falkner and another Olive Hill resident, Elijah Triplett Jr., had driven tracked equipment into a remote area on Erwin Road, off Christy Creek, to cut firewood.
According to Triplett, Falkner was cutting a red oak tree more than 100 feet tall and two feet in diameter when it appeared to rotate off the stump.
Triplett said the top of the tree came into contact with surrounding trees, causing it to kick back and strike Falkner.
Triplett attempted to call 911 from the scene but could not get cellphone service.
Northcutt said the accident scene was more than a mile into the woods and that Triplett had to drive the equipment out in order to call for help.
“Emergency crews were dispatched at 10:12 a.m. and arrived minutes later,” Northcutt said. “Triplett drove the emergency medical service team back to the scene in his track as four-wheel drive vehicles couldn’t have made it back into the very rugged steep terrain.”
EMS determined that Falkner was deceased and Northcutt was called to the scene at 10:33 a.m.
“Falkner was pronounced dead at the scene,” Northcutt said. “Cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and chest.”
The incident remains under investigation by the Rowan County Coroner’s office and by Kentucky State Police Trooper Joshua Preece.
