Driver crashes through Rite Aid

Aug. 5, 2011 —     A Morehead man was charged with driving under the influence after he was found by police in the driver’s seat of a vehicle still wedged in the east side of the Rite Aid store on West Main Street.

Robert Ward Jr., 30, was admitted to St. Claire Regional Medical Center Wednesday and charged with DUI.

MPD patrolmen Josh Plank and Derek Howard responded to the injury accident at 1:37 a.m. and found Ward in the vehicle allegedly extremely intoxicated.

The extent of damages was confined to an area next to the photo desk inside, but according to corporate public relations representative Eric Harkreader, the communication systems were damaged.

“The store was closed for just under two hours on Wednesday morning,” Harkreader said. “Staff was able to open and run limited services, accepting cash or checks and delivering all prescriptions,” he added.

Rite Aid Corporation is investigating the incident and has not determined what, if any, charges will be filed.

“Our focus is on a permanent fix and getting the store running to full capacity at this time,” said Harkreader.

The accident is still under investigation by MPD and more charges may be pending.
