Efforts underway to make UPIKE a state school

Dec. 24, 2011 — Former Gov. Paul Patton and Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo have decided that the University of Pikeville (UPIKE) should become a state institution.

Stumbo says he will sponsor legislation to make the change during the 2012 session which opens in January.

Morehead State University President Wayne Andrews and others believe a public policy change of such magnitude should be studied carefully in terms of feasibility and affordability.

  • $100,000 to develop plans for rebuilding City of West Liberty

    Gov. Steve Beshear and Congressman Hal Rogers today announced $100,000 in Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) funds have been approved to help begin the process of rebuilding the city of West Liberty and Morgan County. The entire area suffered extensive damage as a result of the devastating storms and tornados that ripped through Kentucky last month.

  • Local woman stable after being shot

    Unadell Eldridge, former owner of Eldridge and Son Farm Supply, was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center Friday after a former employee, Dewey Brickles, 56, apparently shot her in the lower abdomen.

    The Community Soup Kitchen ended its tornado feeding mission last week and has returned to its normal weekday schedule.

    Lunch is served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

  • UPike compromise passes House

    A drastically-revised House Bill 260 cleared the Kentucky House late Tuesday on a vote of 89-7.

    Instead of converting the University of Pikeville (UPike) into a state institution, the bill creates a scholarship program financed with multi-county coal severance tax funds.
